What is the Canada eTA?
The electronic travel authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for citizens of visa-exempt countries who fly to or through Canada. It is electronically linked to your passport.
Does Canada require a visa or an "eVisa"?
Not for citizens of visa-exempt countries such as the UK, France or Australia: they only need an eTA to travel by air. Nationals of other countries generally need a visitor visa, which is a different process.
How long does it take to get an eTA?
Most applications are approved within minutes. Some require additional documents, and instructions are then sent by email, usually within 72 hours. Apply as soon as your trip is planned, ideally before booking your flights.
How long is the eTA valid?
It is generally valid for up to five years, or until the passport expires if that comes first, for an unlimited number of trips. The length of each stay is set by the border services officer on arrival.
Do children need an eTA?
Yes. Every traveller needs their own eTA, including children and infants, with their own passport.
Do I need an eTA to enter Canada by land or sea?
In most cases, no: the eTA is required for air travel. Arriving by car, bus, train or boat from the United States generally does not require one, but a passport is still needed.
Do US citizens need an eTA?
No. US citizens are exempt. US lawful permanent residents have also been exempt since April 26, 2022, provided they present their passport and a valid green card.
